William Shakespeare: A Lover`s Complaint (eBook)

A Lover`s Complaint (eBook)

A Lover's Complaint is a narrative poem published as an appendix to the original edition of Shakespeare's sonnets. In the poem, the speaker sees a young woman weeping at the edge of a river, into which she throws torn-up letters, rings, and other tokens of love. An old man asks the reason for her sorrow, and she responds by telling him of a former lover who pursued, seduced, and finally abandoned her. She concludes her story by conceding that she would fall for the young man's false charms again ...

A quote from this eBook:

"So on the tip of his subduing tongue
All kinds of arguments and questions deep,
All replication prompt, and reason strong,
For his advantage still did wake and sleep.
To make the weeper laugh, the laugher weep,
He had the dialect and different skill,
Catching all passion in his craft of will."
