F. Scott Fitzgerald: The Great Gatsby (eBook)

The Great Gatsby (eBook)

The Great Gatsby is a novel written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald that follows a cast of characters living in the fictional town of West Egg on prosperous Long Island in the summer of 1922. The story primarily concerns the young and mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his quixotic passion for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan. Considered to be Fitzgerald's magnum opus, The Great Gatsby explores themes of decadence, idealism, resistance to change, social upheaval, and excess, creating a portrait of the Jazz Age or the Roaring Twenties that has been described as a cautionary tale regarding the American Dream.

The story of post World War I and the roaring 20s, describes the decay of the American Dream, Seen through the eyes of Nick Carraway, a World War One vet, he sees the opulent and carefree life of parties and decadence of the upper class of society. Nick's friend Jay Gatsby, is the focal point of the story along with the corruption, lies, falseness, and greed that he and his class represent. Similar to today, The Great Gatsby tells of the false security that we have in our lifestyle, the economy, and the American Way of Life.

The Quotes from this eBook:

- "Let us learn to show our friendship for a man when he is alive and not after he is dead."

- "I couldn’t forgive him or like him, but I saw that what he had done was, to him, entirely justified. It was all very careless and confused. They were careless people, Tom and Daisy—they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made."

- "Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall."
