Virginia Woolf: To the Lighthouse (eBook)

To the Lighthouse (eBook)

A landmark of high modernism, the novel centres on the Ramsays and their visits to the Isle of Skye in Scotland between 1910 and 1920. Following and extending the tradition of modernist novelists like Marcel Proust and James Joyce, the plot of To the Lighthouse is secondary to its philosophical introspection. The novel includes little dialogue and almost no action; most of it is written as thoughts and observations. The novel recalls childhood emotions and highlights adult relationships. Among the book's many tropes and themes are those of loss, subjectivity, and the problem of perception.

The quotes from this eBook:

“So that is marriage, Lily thought, a man and a woman looking at a girl throwing a ball.”

“He lay on his chair with his hands clasped above his paunch not reading, or sleeping, but basking like a creature gorged with existence.”

“They came to her, naturally, since she was a woman, all day long with this and that; one wanting this, another that; the children were growing up; she often felt she was nothing but a sponge sopped full of human emotions.”
