To delo Josipa Jurčiča velja za prvi slovenski roman, ki je bil dokončan leta 1866.  Za izhodišče je Jurčič uporabil ljudski motiv desetega brata in kot tak prikazuje usodo desetega otroka v družini, češ da lahko prinaša nesrečo.
