V svojem času je bil Josip Stritar poznan po tem, da je bil literarni vzgojitelj pesniškega rodu, hkrati pa tudi pesnik, esejist, urednik. Pisal pa je tudi kritična pisma, satire in dela za mladino.

Stritar je bil med prvimi našimi pesniki, ki je opazil in v svojih pesmih predstavil ter opisal socialne krivice v svetu in se v svojih pesmih od le-teh jasno distanciral.
